Santa's Helpers Hoping to Help Washago

Get used to seeing this logo around town. There is a new group in the Village of Washago that is trying to make a Christmas difference.

They are a group of local residents who want to make sure Santa has a gift under the tree for every boy and girl on their Santa’s Helper List. Santa’s Helpers will be having fundraising events to purchase age-appropriate gifts for under the Christmas trees in town.

Watch for Santa’s Helpers donation jars at local retailers and give as generously as you can to help create smiles for all children in this community.

On Friday, Oct. 18 at noon, CiaoChowCiao will have a BBQ in front of Canoe Fresh Food Market to help raise money for the cause. Join them for back bacon on a bun and sausages on a bun.

On Friday, Nov. 29, there will also be a Chili Euchre night at the Washago Community Centre to raise money. Tickets are $25 per person and includes a delicious chili dinner, a night of euchre, cash prizes and 50/50 draw. They are available at CiaoChowCiao and Simply Special Originals or by calling 705-514-1190 to book tables. Reserve your table by Nov. 27 as this will sell out fast.

Participants are also asked to bring an unwrapped toy.

This needs to be a community effort. Residents can help by attending fundraising events and supporting however they can.

New toys, mitts, hats and scarves – or other new items that are appropriate – are also needed to include in the gift boxes for the children of our area.

Contact Karen or Gary at 705-514-1190 if you would like to make a donation.

CiaoChowCiao Wood Oven Eatery

Part of this new addition to Washago is the CiaoChowCiao Wood Oven Eatery. Todd Frenette and Theresa Filicetti are the proud proprietors of the eatery. The couple are Washago residents, who, after spending years employed in the technology industry, decided to retire to the cottage. They both love to cook and had been thinking about developing a new business in the food industry. They heard about Rod and Mary's new undertaking and the rest is history.

CiaoChowCiao (which translates to "hello, eat, goodbye") is located to the back of the Canoe Fresh Food Market. Todd told me that he built the 500 square foot kitchen himself, with the help of friends. The centre-piece of the bistro is the massive (2000 pound) wood fired pizza oven. The frame for the oven was built by a local welder and it's on wheels! This was done to simplify the exact positioning required for installation, and enable future refinements to the layout of the kitchen.

The oven runs at 900°F and cooks a pizza in 90 seconds! Only the finest ingredients are used, including Gran Mugnaio "00" flour, which is largely regarded as the best flour in the world, especially for making the perfect Italian pizza. Todd and Theresa are getting into the rhythm of running a restaurant, response has been fantastic and they have been selling out of everything on a daily basis!

CiaoChowCiao boasts a vast array of pizzas, including dessert pizza, a hot table (with pastas and meats), a soup and stew table (soups coming during the colder weather), deli, deli wraps, sweets, salads, breakfast fare and an espresso bar! They are open daily from 10 am with pizza and hot table foods available after 11 am.

The Canoe Fresh Food Market and CiaoChowCiao are located in Washago at 3384 Muskoka Street. Open Monday to Thursday 8 am to 8 pm, Friday 8 am to 9 pm, Saturday 8 am to 8 pm and Sunday 10 am to 6 pm.
